3D gaming impressions on the LG Optimus 3D

Posted by Dan Mousavi On February - 17 - 2011

3D games could be the next big thing in gaming and while gamers are patiently waiting for the Nintendo 3DS, LG is bringing the same technology to smartphones in a big way.
The idea sounds promising, since a lot of people are familiar with the technology after 3D movies took off with the release of Avatar, the 3D hype makes sense.
But the glasses-free technology used in these mobile devices has severe limitations, that make it pretty unattractive when you play a video game.
At any time there are two images visible, one for your right eye and one for the left. If you hold the device in the right distance and orientation, you get a nice 3D effect.

Zen Pinball announced for Android

Posted by Dan Mousavi On February - 15 - 2011

Zen studios, the company behind my favorite Flipper in the last 10 years (Pinball FX), will bring their excellent flipper game Zen Pinball to Android. Formerly a PS 3 exclusive title, it will now also run on Tegra 2 tablets and it looks just beautiful.
This is a very early version, so don’t expect a release soon, but since we’ll need a Tegra 2 device anyway, I’m sure we can wait a little longer for it. Until then here are two videos, the first one is autoplay, the second one is real gameplay.

Vendetta Online for Android

Posted by Dan Mousavi On February - 15 - 2011

Vendetta Online from Guild software is a PC MMORPG that started in 2004 and is still actively played by thousands of players.
This space flight sim has a single world where all users are playing together and soon we Android user can join them.
The game has different level regions, so it shouldn’t be too unfair to start from scratch.
The game is in development since 1998 and because of that it has a very robust online code, that works with slow internet connections, so it should be perfect for mobile gaming. The Android client is almost ready, it will take just a little while longer. Until then you can enjoy this short offline demonstration of the game and if you want to try it now, you can get a free trial of the PC version on their homepage.

War Drum Studios games on Android

Posted by Dan Mousavi On February - 15 - 2011

War Drum studios showed off their games recently at the Honeycomb presentation, but now we were able to see them up close and personal.

Monster Madness is a port that combines the best stuff of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. It runs really good and has a easy mode for new tablet gamers. I think the gore in the game was toned down, but they said they will look into it, to get it up again. The game will be release in the coming weeks, but sadly only for Tegra 2 powered devices.

HISTORY™ Great Battles Medieval was also shown at the Honeycomb event, it is a port of the 360 version that was only released in europe and will run on all dualcore handsets.

Chess Revolution is a high quality chess game that will have 40 different AI opponents and a big multiplayer mode. The game looks really great (for a chess game) and will probably be the best in it’s class. If you are a chess player, this could be the game for you.

First look: Cordy

Posted by Dan Mousavi On February - 15 - 2011

Cordy is a jump and run developed by Silvertree media, until now this nice Jump and run that is build with Unity was PC exclusive.
You play a robot with a screen for it’s head, that can swing with his cord and will get upgrades, that are then displayed on his face.
The game looks very bright and plays very fast paced, looks like a real good Jump and run to me.

You can try it yourself at http://www.cordythegame.com/ and soon you can play it on your Android. The game will be free with in-app purchases for more levels.

Telltale games are bringing their games to Android

Posted by Dan Mousavi On February - 15 - 2011

Telltale games made a name for themselves by doing serialized adventures with huge success, they brought back these classic games and when they license games, they managed to keep the wits by working closely with the original developers.

Sadly the games are too advanced for your standard Android device, that’s why they are exclusive for the time being on Tegra 2 tablets.
Sam & Max Season 3 was shown and it ran beautifully, they also showed Trailers of Back to the future, their newest adventure, that will hopefully also come to Android, it is not officially announced yet.

They also showed iPhone hit Puzzle Agent on the booth of our beloved plattform. It will be just a matter of time, until we can get all the new adventures on our devices, so stay tuned.

Here are some videos of the games they’ve shown.

Xperia Play Hands-on

Posted by Dan Mousavi On February - 14 - 2011

Yesterday Sony unveiled their new smartphone for gamers, while the phone itself is nothing new, thanks to countless leaks, having the device in the hand and seeing official games for it is something that surprised a lot of people, because the games all ran super smooth and the fun of playing mobile games increased tremendously, just because you have real buttons.

The device will be available in Europe from nearly every carrier in March and will launch in America this Spring through Verizon. So let’s start with the hands – on, so you can decide for yourself, if this could be your next smartphone.

As a reference game, we will start with the PS 1 Emulation:

Qualcomm teases AR Games, will show them at MWC

Posted by Dan Mousavi On February - 9 - 2011

Qualcomm uploaded a compilation of the best entries that were submitted to their developer challenge.
Back in October 2010 Qualcomm released their SDK and they announced a developer challenge with cash prices up to 200000$. In November they released their SDK as a plugin for Unity, which made creating awesome games with it very easy, if you already had experience with Unity.
Since the devkit is still in beta, this is the first glimpse you can get on the future Augmented Reality games on Android.
All games that are shown run on a Nexus One or similar handset and when the Qualcomm Ar Kit is officially released, a lot more Android handsets will be supported.
